Women Empowerment Conference

Women Empowerment Conference

On the 12th of March of 2021, in the context of International Women’s Day, three IB Diploma students (Leyre Martinez, Beatriz Teran, and Diana Ruiz ) celebrated a conference with the help of Amaia Gorostiza, Irene Sendra, and Henar Landa; 3 powerful women, who have kindly agreed to share their experience with us. They talked with Upper School students about their journey and the experiences they have gone through to be where they are today, and the setbacks they had faced because of gender.

The main goal of this conference was to encourage students to feel inspired and empowered. Apart from this, we also wanted to raise awareness, and apprise students about what is happening in our society in relation to  the gender gap that women are faced with. We also hoped to motivate young women at ASB to choose whatever career they please, regardless of their gender. Gender should not affect the decision being taken.

Women in history have been discriminated against in all aspects, such as the type of jobs they have, their minimum wage they receive, objectification, etc. Many women have sacrificed their lives to try to change this, but sadly, we are still faced with many instances of discrimination, so this conference is a priceless opportunity to make this inequality visible and listen to successful stories in unusual traditionally “men” fields.

The ASB community is very thankful for having the opportunity to hear their voices.

Amaia Gorostiza (Eibar, Spain, 1967) is the president of SD Eibar, taking over the club on the 23rd of May 2016. She was the first woman to ever direct the team in the Basque club’s 77-year history. During her two years in power, Gorostiza has been able to keep SD Eibar in LaLiga, an incredible achievement. Her exploits are made more impressive when considering that the city of Eibar has a population of barely 30,000, and that they play in one of the most competitive leagues in the world. Born in Eibar, Amaia Gorostiza is a member of the Amaya Tellería Group’s Executive Board. She is also a member of Elkargi SGR’s Finance Committee, as well as an executive board member for that company and others, such as Dominion and APD Zona Norte, and is also auditor for the latter. In her family, she has a mirror in which to look: her mother, Amaya Tellería, who in the ’50s founded the automotive group that bears her name from a workshop that was in bankruptcy. As fruit of her work, she was recognized with awards as the best Basque businessman in 2013.

Irene started her studies in Physics back in 2002 at the University of Valencia. After finishing her master in Astrophysics at the same university she moved to Basque Country where she got her Doctorate degree in the field of Cosmology. She has been a visiting researcher at the Department of Astrophysics of the Oxford University and Caltech where she worked for the NASA project Relics analysing the data from the Hubble Telescope. During this time she has published 21 research articles in international magazines. She was already a teacher at ASB during 2013-15 and after moving to the USA to work at Caltech she became the ICT Director at the American School of Warsaw (Poland). We are lucky to have lured her back at the BAsque Country to join the ASB community again. She is currently our MYP Design and DP Physics and Math teacher.

A part of her high school education was carried out in Montana, USA. This stay abroad, in addition to strengthening her knowledge of English and North American culture, helped her discover a strong vocation oriented to coexistence in multicultural environments and mutual enrichment between people from different countries. This vocation was further broadened during her Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting, which Henar studied in Madrid, at the Universidad Pontificia de Comillas ICADE (Class of 2001). Once graduated, she began to work in several companies in the sector, although she soon decided that the objective was to start her own initiative with everything she had learned. It is in 2003 when, finally, the signature and corporate identity of Round The World Spain was established. “This moment is just the beginning of something new and exciting that had been brewing long before.”

Round the World Spain is a very successful business dedicated to offering the best programs and courses abroad.
