Sunu Gaal foundation

Last Friday, the 11th Grade class from the American School of Bilbao had a special visit from the president of the Sunu Gaal foundation, Mbaye Gil Sanchez; an NGO that helps immigrants from Senegal and neighbouring countries in need. During this visit we learnt that the situation for youngsters in Senegal is a lot worse than we thought. Many of the DP students present were unaware of the reality of immigrants. We also learnt about the organisation Mbaye has set up. What they do, what their future projects are and how we, as IBDP CAS students can help.

The organisation has provided medical equipment and expertise to a local hospital that caters for a population of 80,000. They are also helping to improve the installations of a school.

Mbaye also spent some time talking about his story that goes back to 2003 when he first arrived in the Canary Islands in a small boat which has led him to his present job of nurse in the Hospital of Basurto. On the way, he has also managed to learn Basque and is able to converse fluently. We wish him all the best in his future ventures. The school will keep in contact with him as our school community may become involved in one of his projects.
