Partners for a Day

Partners for a Day

Dear Parents and Students,

It is our pleasure to inform you that the 2024 edition of the Partners for a Day program, organized by Junior Achievement foundation with collaboration of our School has ended. The program involved students visiting an organization to understand what the day-to-day operations of a company are like.

It was the first time that the American School of Bilbao collaborated with Junior Achievement foundation. We do hope that next year we repeat the event and with the help of local companies we create more opportunities for our students to experience one day at business.

Not all of the students have a chance to meet with the company, but those who participated truly appreciate the opportunity. Some of their reflections are:

I was speaking with an engineer from BBVA, who before had studied at ICAI, in Madrid. The experience was very beneficial for me, as he explained in depth what he did on his job daily, such as doing calculations about costs for electricity, making decisions on the costs and benefits gained from certain constructions, actually designing the constructions and maintaining them, etc. He also helped us decide which engineering was the best for us to choose, by telling us the clear differences between each other. This was very helpful, as I was not sure which one to choose.

In the second session, we did a real-life exercise about how to solve a problem the building “Ciudad BBVA” had in the process of construction, a problem that he and his team had to truly solve. It was basically the decisions that could be taken, taking into account the costs, that the materials were already purchased, and that the building was already in the process of construction, in order to fix the problem in the middle of the construction.”

These two Partners for a Day sessions have been a very interesting experience. In this case, I collaborated with the company Cellnex, a telecommunications company. Thanks to Enrique Álvarez, I was able to learn several things about his company and his work. In the future, I would like to study engineering, I’m not sure which one yet, but I know it won’t be telecommunications; however, this topic has interested me quite a lot. The guy was very friendly and open to any kind of questions.

During BBVA I have discovered several ways in which the bank works, however I have learned little about the actual work they have/do. This is because it was difficult for me to understand. Even so, the rest was perfect. They were very kind to me and generally explained what each of them did in the sector of data. I was in several conferences taking notes and while I did not understand much of what was said, I am glad I tried and that they explained it generally to me afterwards. I believe this was a great experience for me and I would gladly do it again.

I would resume this activity as a great opportunity to learn about something that you are interested in and I think everyone should give it a chance. I think it’s a very enjoyable experience and it creates a first touch with the reality beyond the studies that require the job. I think this is all possible because of the good engagement by the volunteers, a great example and also because the environment is surrounded by people who have common interests.
