Letter to parents 2020 winter

Letter to parents 2020 winter

Dear Parents,

Psychologists define resilience as the process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress. Resilience not only helps us bounce back from difficult situations, it makes us stronger.  December marks 9 months since the start of this pandemic.  At that time, no one could have imagined that we would still be dealing with this virus.  With the number of cases increasing locally and around the world, there are few who have not had either a friend or relative affected by Covid.

Many schools around the world are still holding classes asynchronously, or through blended learning models that combine distance learning with traditional in the classroom methods. I can speak on behalf of all of us here at ASB when I say we feel fortunate to be able to work face to face with our students since September. Research is showing that students who are learning remotely over a long period of time are negatively impacted emotionally and socially.  Nothing replaces the role a teacher has in the classroom and our resilience throughout often extreme circumstances strengthens our resolve to do whatever it takes to ensure the success of our students.

Yet there is light on the horizon, and vaccines are being distributed as I write this. It is important that we not let our guard down. The winter months ahead typically see a rise of the normal flu, so hopefully by summer we will be able to return to some sort of normality.

As we approach the Holidays, I feel it is important to share some positive things that have happened in 2020.  Our distance learning program was a great success. Our IBDP results were the highest ever and our graduates got to have their Graduation Ceremony at San Mames.

We have been back at school since September and due to our safety protocols have not had to close the school at any time.

Our application for the MYP authorization has been accepted and we are looking forward to a virtual accreditation visit this spring.  We are excited at the prospect of fulfilling our goal, which was set 6 years ago, of becoming a continuum IB school.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers, administrators and secretaries for all their efforts in ensuring that our students are prepared and on task with their assignments.  I’ve witnessed their efforts and work ethic, and I feel humbled and fortunate to work side-by-side with them each and every day.   More so, our students arrive each day eager to be here which is the most important metric.

We are and will continue to be resilient.

Thank you for your support. We all here at ASB wish every one of you a Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Kind regards,
