Kindergarten: How We Express Ourselves
In Kindergarten, students have been diving into their emotions, particularly anger, in our second year-long unit, “How We Express Ourselves.” Our central idea is: People use imagination and creativity to communicate and express themselves. We discussed what anger feels like in our bodies, and read the story, “When Sophie Gets Angry, Really Really Angry” by Molly Bang. Then, we talked about positive ways in which we can deal with anger and created a class story titled “When We Are Angry.” Children were encouraged to consider effective ways to deal with anger, make good choices, and calm themselves down. They drew and wrote about the ‘effective strategies’ to cope with anger and Kindergarten teachers made a book of strategies for students to look at whenever they need.
