Breast Cancer Awareness at ASB

Breast Cancer Awareness at ASB

October is globally acknowledged as breast cancer awareness month. This disease is prevalent at a global scale, especially in women. It is estimated that one in every eight women will develop breast cancer, which is most common among women over the age of fifty. A big misconception is that only women are prone to getting a diagnosis, when in fact, men make up a little less than one percent of all cases.

Breast cancer occurs when cells located in an individual’s breast mutate, grow, and divide in an uncontrolled manner, forming a mass, which is known as a tumor. CAS DP students and MYP4 students were lucky to learn about this process during a talk given by Mª del Mar Vivanco, who gave a presentation on the basics and dangers of this type of cancer.  DP2 students took advantage of this opportunity to give Mª del Mar Vivanco (CICbioGUNE) a check with all the money collected last year towards breast cancer investigation.

There are many ways in which one could help. These could vary from awareness campaigns to monetary donations. Having said this, all ASB is encouraged to wear pink every Friday for the month of October in order to support our fight against this malady.

Additionally, ACAMBI, an organization dedicated to the awareness and research of breast cancer, has hosted a solitary race in Bilbao this October 9th. All donations and money raised has been destined for breast cancer research. Many of our students participated in this enriching experience this last weekend, representing the solidary spirit at ASB.

Keep an eye for other activities related to this awareness coming up!
