ASB MUN Returns to the Debates!
At the end of the 2019-2020 school year, our MUN Team was not able to participate in the St. Andrews MUN Conference in Dublin because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. It was a disappointment for all of us because this is the most challenging Conference in the European MUN Conference circuit and we were prepared to go and actively participate.
This school year, we also encountered another cancellation, the Royal Russell MUN Conference in London. This is one of the most beloved conferences for our ASB Delegates. This is the one where we learned what MUN is all about and formed long-lasting friendships.
In December we have been invited to attend two virtual conferences. The first is hosted by St. Georges MUN in Cologne, Germany. It will take place from 29 to 30 January 2021. This will be a first-time conference for us. The Conference Leader is Ms. Laura Plunket, an ASB Alumna, Class of 1996.
We have 17 students from Grades 9 and 10 who will be attending this conference. Our ASB Leaders are Diego B., Alvaro M., Nicolás M., and Aidan Y., all students from DP1. They will perform these duties under the supervision of Mr. Terry Howard, MUN Adviser.
This MUN Conference will have two Committees: Security Council, which is for experienced MUN Delegates; and Disarmament, which is for new MUN Delegates. The countries that will be represented are:
- Security Council: The Yemen Civil War
- Belgium
- Brazil
- Ireland
- Lebanon
- North Korea
- Russian Federation
- Senegal
- South Africa
- United Arab Emirates
- Disarmament Committee: The Denuclearization of North Korea
-
- Brazil
- France
- Japan
- Russian Federation
- Republic of South Korea
- Switzerland
- Turkey
- United Kingdom
The second conference is later in March, we will attend the Virtual MUN Milan, hosted by Civico Polo Linguistico Manzoni. This conference is special for us. It has traditionally been the first MUN Conference for our Delegates. It is here that many of our delegates get bitten by the MUN Bug and become active members of our club. It is with great pleasure that we will be returning to this conference!
The dates of the conference are 25 to 27 March 2021. We will have 24 students attending from grades 8 to 10. The topics that will be debated at this conference are:
- General Assembly: Assessing the Impact of Covid-19 on Healthcare Systems and the Environment
- Security Council:
-
- The Situation in Yemen
- The Peaceful Resolution of the Kashmir Conflict
- Disarmament and International Security Disrupting Transnational Criminal Networks
- Promoting Democracy and Security in the Maghreb Region Combating Maritime Crime and Piracy
- Social and Humanitarian Committee:
-
- Ending the Use of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhumane or Degrading Treatment or Punishment of Prisoners
- Ending Contemporary Forms of Slavery and Exploitation of Labour
We will share more information as the conferences get closer.
