Welcome to the American School of Bilbao (ASB) Upper School.
At ASB, we work hard to ensure that we are a school where strong relationships exist between students, who are eager to learn, and teachers who are motivated and skilled to help them succeed. Through our mission we inspire students to develop an open-minded and respectful attitude as global citizens. In this nurturing and diverse community, we encourage students to reach their fullest potential, and become lifelong learners in a caring and safe environment.
Our student body, predominantly Spanish in origin, is diverse and internationally minded. English is the language of instruction and we are privileged to have an experienced, highly qualified and largely English speaking teaching staff.
Beginning in Grade 6, the teachers and staff prepare students for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) using a variety of methodologies including inquiry, collaborative learning, project-based learning, direct instruction, problem solving, and web-based instruction. In Grades 9 and 10, our students study for Cambridge IGCSE examinations in English and Spanish.
As our Grade 10 students prepare for the IBDP, we provide them with a comprehensive program of advice and counseling, so that our students are well-equipped for the subject choices they will make in Grade 11 & 12. As they enter the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, their course of study includes an Extended Essay (EE) Theory of Knowledge (TOK), and Creativity Activity Service (CAS).
In our three years as an IB School, we have grown our program to incorporate more students, increased the number of course offerings, and our graduation classes have maintained an average above the world average for IB Diploma scores. Additionally, our graduating classes have been between 96% and 100% passing rate each year. This is a very proud achievement for our small school and further qualifies us as a progressive and ambition environment.
ASB students are accepted by the best universities locally and internationally and go on to study in many of the top fields offered.
Beyond the classroom, we aim to provide enhanced learning opportunities. We encourage our students to take ownership of their education and try to give them every opportunity to make an impact on their program and community. We have an active Student Council and our students participate in Model United Nations (MUN) and Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA). Each of these are designed to provide opportunities for our students to develop skills, understanding and compassion for the challenges of the 21st century.
ASB has strong support systems, where all students have a homeroom (class) teacher who accepts responsibility for the general welfare of the children in their homeroom class. Educational and emotional support is further provided by our qualified SEN and support counselors.
Along with my staff and colleagues, I am very proud to be here at The American School of Bilbao. I look forward to welcoming you to our community and school.
